Our New York Office Announces The Addition of Three Partners

Our New York office announces the addition of three partners, expanding the firm’s D&O, Professional Liability and Property insurance practices. The thee partners joining the firm are Joseph Smick, Laura Markovich and Bill Kolb.
James Skarzynski, Chairman of the firm, said: “Joe and Laura are a fantastic addition to the firm’s director and officer and professional liability practices and we’re delighted to welcome them to our team. Bill also adds to the strength of our property and reinsurance practice groups with his years of experience in handling many large exposure, complex matters on behalf of his clients. All three of our new partners have worked on some very high-profile cases and have a wealth of experience in these practice areas, which will enhance the depth and range of experience we offer our clients.”
Joseph Smick’s legal background includes representing insurers in litigation matters, advising them as coverage/monitoring counsel on directors and officers, agents/brokers, pension trust (ERISA), insurance company, employment practices liability and general liability policies. He has also counseled insurance carriers in drafting and amending policy language and addressing specialized risks. Joseph received his undergraduate degree from Pace University and his law degree from The John Marshall Law School. He is a member of the New York State and American Bar Associations and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society.
Laura Markovich has extensive experience representing domestic and foreign insurers, negotiating large complex claims and coverage concerns under policies covering directors and officers liability, financial institution liability, professional liability, errors and omissions, and employment practices liability, and providing policy drafting advice. Laura received her undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and her law degree from Brooklyn Law School. She is a member of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society with admissions to New York, the U.S. District Court (E.D.N.Y.), and the U.S. District Court (S.D.N.Y.).
The firm is also pleased to announce that Bill Kolb joined the firm in December 2013 as a principal. Bill Kolb has nearly twenty years of experience in complex first- and third-party insurance and reinsurance matters. He has handled a number of high-profile matters arising from Hurricanes Katrina, Ike, and Sandy. He also advises insurers on coverage issues and the drafting of policy forms, and recently was recognized in New York Metro Super Lawyers, 2013. Bill received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law. He has admissions in New York, the U.S. District Court (E.D.N.Y.) and the U.S. District Court (S.D.N.Y.).
